Lincrusta paint effect in Westminster London: We were contacted by a client in Westminster to hang Lincrusta and to apply a paint effect but as we were working out of the country. Our time schedule didn’t allow us enough time to hang the Lincrusta so this was passed on to another Lincrusta installer. Paint effects London.
The room was the last one in this very impressive house to be decorated and the brief was to produce a wow factor and pull out every detail that this period house had to offer. lincrusta paint effect in westminster london.
Lincrusta was launched in 1877 to instant success in a host of applications from royal homes to railway carriages. Heralded as the first washable wall covering. It appealed to Victorians because of its sanitary properties as well as its durability and ornate effects.
A British invention, it was the brainchild of manufacturer Frederick Walton whose father pioneered linoleum floor covering in the 1860´s. Originally launched as “Linoleum Muralis”, it was subsequently re-named “Lincrusta-Walton” − Lin for Linum (flax, from which linseed oil is made) and Crusta (Relief), with the inventor´s name being added to prevent other firms using the same title. lincrusta paint effect in westminster london.
First manufactured at Sunbury-on-Thames before production moved to Darwen in 1918. Lincrusta is a classic product which has never needed “improving”, made from totally natural materials.
Preparing the Lincrusta for painting.
First we degreased the lincrusta using white spirit and allowed it to dry for 24 hours. We then dressed all the joints.
After we had finished dressing the joints, we applied a coat of acrylic primer undercoat and two coats of acrylic eggshell for a base.
Mixing & applying a paint glaze.
The glaze we used for this effect was Feelings Effect Paint from Holman paints.
Feelings Effect Paint is a fully matt low odour waterborne translucent designer finish for use in interior walls and ceilings. It has a long ’open’ time for effect finishes such as colour washing, dragging, rag rolling, bagging, sponging etc.
We mixed colour stainers into the glaze to create the colour we required. The glaze was then applied using a wall brush, hair stippled using a hair stippler and then wiped back using dry rags. lincrusta paint effect in westminster london
Wiping back the glaze leaves it in the relief which high lights the pattern.
Applying gold paint.
The gold paint we used was Metallic Emulsion by Crown and we applied this using upholsterers foam. This was a slow process taking five days to paint all the relief of the Lincrusta, cornice and woodwork.
When the clients walked into the room, we had achieved the wow factor they desired.
