Hand Painted Kitchen Cotswolds: The phone call could not have prepared us for nicer clients or for the beautiful and atmospheric surroundings that would be our workplace for the next two weeks.
The commission was a grade two listed building (circa 1700) in Shipton under Wychwood, a charming village situated in a conservation area within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Beauty. The client’s feel for the history of the house quickly became apparent and a little Googling that evening informed us of the history not only of the house, but also of the village. A brief but fascinating example was the building that the nearby Shaven Crown Hotel occupies. Founded in the 14th century by the monks of Bruern Abbey, it was a shelter for pilgrims for the next two hundred years and a hospice for the poor and needy. It was seized by the crown following the dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century and eventually used as a royal hunting lodge by Queen Elizabeth the First.
But enough of that, down to work. Keeping in mind the clients sympathetic feelings for the history of their house and the brighter, fresher feel they wanted in their wooden beamed Mark Wilkinson kitchen, we were again faced with a dilemma we had become accustomed to.
Despite having been painted originally 25 years ago, it had been completed in a rather muted and distressed effect and the clients wanted to repeat the effect in a slightly lighter colour, a sensible choice in keeping with the historic ambiance and the longevity of the last paint job.
A selection of samples had been produced for the client in hand mixed combinations of their colour selection and their final choice was then created by Holmans Paint using Tikkurilla Feelings Paint Effects, which fortunately for us is suitable for furniture and walls. Preparation is the most important part of any commission and the surface we were about to work on had not been touched for 25 years. After protecting the floor and work surfaces with lining paper and taping the unit handles, drawer edges and cupboard interiors, we got to work with sugar soap. As we had been asked to colour wash the walls to compliment the furniture, this was a complete kitchen cleanse.
Although minor defects in furniture surfaces often lend themselves to distressed effects,
there was some fairly substantial damage. The client’s lovely pair of hounds had at some time or other started to eat some floor level areas of the units and these now required considerable filling. We used Two Pack Wood Filler and having revived the profile of the gnawed areas, we produced an unbelievably smooth finish onto which we applied the base coats – it was then time for the paint effect. Bearing in mind the client’s brief and by regularly consulting with them, the distressed effect started to take shape. Some areas received two top coats, some only one and different levels of abrasion were applied dependent on the supposed amount of usage the area would get.
At last we could stand back and once the client had declared their satisfaction, congratulate ourselves for a couple of minutes. Then onward dusting, hoovering, tack ragging and finally applying two coats of Kiva Interior Lacquer, a waterborne non-yellowing acrylic lacquer created by Tikkurilla for exactly the job we had just finished. Using Tikkurilla Feelings again, we were able to create the effect required for the walls, lifting the kitchen into a marginally lighter zone just as the clients wanted.
