Kevin Mapstone

Owner | Specialist Kitchen Painter

My name is Kevin Mapstone and I am a specialist kitchen and furniture painter with over 25 years experience. During this time I have worked both for private clients as well as many of the leading furniture and kitchen painting companies. I have been proud to accept commissions from Mark Wilkinson Furniture, Smallbone of Devizes, McCarron & Co and Linley London.

After completing a two year graphic design course, I found that I had a natural aptitude and passion for specialist decoration and continued my training along those lines, gaining a distinction in Advanced Craft City & Guilds. I then studied for a further two years in marbling and graining and took extensive private tuition from an eminent London decorative artist.

With my fine art background, technical skills and a conscientious work ethic, I have been rewarded with a varied and loyal clientele both in Europe and worldwide. I have also been very fortunate to work with many prominent interior designers and architects, as well as bespoke kitchen and furniture designers many of whom have had their work previewed in ‘Homes and Gardens’ and other leading interior design magazines.

I have an aptitude for teaching and have lectured at college and run non-vocational courses in decorative painting. The highlight of my teaching experience was the two years I devoted to teaching City & Guilds Interior Design and Decorative Paint Techniques.

In the course of my career I have been extremely fortunate to meet many of the best kitchen and furniture painters practising within the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. I have been party to the founding of Hand Painted Kitchens UK, an alliance of experts within their fields of which membership is solely by invitation.

Tom Mapstone

Specialist Kitchen Painter

My name is Tom Mapstone and after a ten year apprenticeship, I can say that I am also a specialist kitchen and furniture painter. I attended college and achieved the necessary qualifications to be able to call myself a painter and decorator. With my father as an example, I wanted more than everyday painting and decorating work and as a result started the long trek through all of the skills necessary to become a specialist.

My first two years involved no more than taping up, ensuring that all surfaces were secure and that the client had complete confidence in the process. I also discovered that long before any painting began, the preparation involved many hours of rubbing down, gunning in and filling.

Over the next two years we worked as far afield as Jordan and as close to home as France as well as Norway, Hungary, Switzerland, Spain and Poland. I  learnt the art of mixing paint to exactly the right consistency for both undercoats and topcoats as well as considering the climate we were working in.

Four years into my apprenticeship, I was at last ready to apply paint to a surface albeit undercoat and then only after preparing said surface. This of course led me into the treatment of many non-specific problems that we encounter within the wide variety of furniture and kitchens that we work on.

Time has progressed and for the past six years, I have been fortunate to be able to enhance my skills whilst working for many prestigious clients as well as an equal number of exclusive kitchen and furniture designers and manufacturers. I am also proud to be a member of Hand Painted Kitchens UK. www.HPKUK.com

What our clients say

We had a bespoke painted kitchen which had become very tatty and chipped. We did not want to have to replace it and so we researched options. We found Kevin on the internet and he provided a very reasonable quotation and was happy to provide references, all of whom spoke so highly of him that we decided to go ahead and have the kitchen re-painted. We are very glad we did as Kevin and Tom have done a fantastic job. I have to say, it is now better than it was when it was new! We are absolutely delighted with the finished result and I have no hesitation in recommending Kevin and Tom.- Mr & Mrs Foster Surrey
“Kevin Mapstone was employed by me to paint my house in Palace Gardens Terrace, Kensington, with special effects, including the Mark Wilkinson designed kitchen which was superbly done. I also employed Kevin and his team to add special effects, including trompe l’oeil, to my house in Geneva, Switzerland, and to choose paints and give guidance on general decoration. They are very professional and organized and can envisage artistic treatment and clever touch-up wherever paintwork or a paint effect is needed. I remember that my greatest admiration was when they turned my ordinary bannister in Palace Gardens Terrace into what most people believed to be a solid oak bannister! During his time with me Kevin and his team always proved efficient, skilful and very reliable, and I would have no hesitation in recommending their services.”- Simon Agace Geneva
``Kevin and Tom spent two and a half weeks working at my house in Spain. They were extremely professional, diligent and conscientious throughout which meant working with them was a pleasure. They carried out all their tasks with initiative and a great positive attitude. The house was left looking immaculate and the only regret was not being able to take advantage of some of their other obvious decorating skills. I look forward to working with them in the future.“- Tom Vigors Spain
