Mark Wilkinson. A much respected designer.
‘Furniture is a way of speaking and for me. A natural form of expression’.
This simple statement speaks volumes about the philosophy of Mark Wilkinson. A quote by Eliot Nusbaum writing in the Sunday Times described Mark Wilkinson as the ‘Mozart of Kitchen Cabinet Makers’.
Mark Wilkinson himself states that he left school unable to spell and with no formal qualifications. He was however an extremely competent craftsman able by the age of 16 to make tables, chairs, windows and doors.
Mark Wilkinson entered the kitchen furniture market in 1975 as one of the founders of the renowned bespoke kitchen makers Smallbone of Devizes. Six years later he branched out leaving both Devizes and Smallbone and created ‘Unmistakably Mark Wilkinson’ in Greater Manchester.

He is without doubt a pioneer with a passion for beautiful bespoke sustainable furniture. More than that he is a compassionate member of society. Amongst many honours and awards he has been awarded the ‘Medal of the Order of the League of Mercy’ (OLM) for his support of the specialist teaching charity Dyslexia Action. In 2008 his wife Cynthia Wilkinson accepted the Learning Skills Council’s Apprenticeship Award on behalf of the company. This award was for ten years of providing apprenticeships for young furniture makers.
He also contributes to the design teaching at the Rotherham College of Arts and Technology as well as Rycotewood College and the Chelsea-based KLC Design School. On top of that, he is a visiting lecturer in Design Creativity at the University of the West of England.
In addition to his pioneering spirit within the world of furniture design he is seriously eco-aware. All of his timber is from well managed sustainable sources with at least Forest Stewardship Council certification (FSC). This covers the oak, maple, walnut and chaperno that his company purchases. Two trees are planted for every individual client’s furniture order. In addition, the majority of waste wood is recycled as far as is possible and with a view to lessening toxins. All his stains are water based as opposed to solvent based.
Mark Wilkinson’s bespoke furniture collections may appear to be traditional now but in 1976 when he first entered the business they were considered a major innovation. However, he didn’t rest on his laurels. The company has continued to push the industry forward in what are previously unthought of ways. This is evident in the company’s success at home and on the worldwide market in the fact that Mark Wilkinson has achieved more awards than any other bespoke furniture company. He is a Founding Fellow of the Society of British Interior Design (SBID) and a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce (FRSA). He has received the Kitchen Industry’s inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004 and was awarded an OBE for services to the Furniture Industry and to charity in 2010.
Finally, this statement published in the Sunday Express 2008 may give a clearer picture of the man.
‘I hate all this minimalist stuff. I want more friendship, more fun, more love and more laughter.’
